With warmer weather and more sunlight, it’s time to get together to watch a sci-fi movie. In July, we will be meeting to watch ***They Live****.*
“They Live” is a 1988 American science fiction action horror film written and directed by John Carpenter, based on the 1963 short story “Eight O’Clock in the Morning” by Ray Nelson. Starring Roddy Piper, Keith David, and Meg Foster, the film follows a drifter who discovers through special sunglasses that the ruling class are aliens concealing their appearance and manipulating people to consume, breed, and conform to the status quo via subliminal messages in mass media.
The film didn’t do well when it first came out in the 80s, but has since become a cult classic, presaging changes in media that were to come in the following decades. It also has a fight scene that gives the John Wayne-Victor McLaughlin match in *The Quiet Man* a run for its money.
Come join us to watch this movie together. We’ll have snacks and drinks.
We encourage you to read, Nelson’s short story, “Eight O’Clock in the Morning” before coming to the movie so we can discuss the differences between the two. RSVP to this Meetup or email SciFi@jeffersonhumanists.org to ensure we have enough food and drink for all. Space is limited is limited to the first 15 people who RSVP.
